Callicarpa americana
American Beautyberry (Calicarpa americana) is a Florida native that can grow in shady gardens as well as in full sun. It can attain a height of 6-8 feet in moist well drained soils. A shrub that definitely benefits from mulching. Its tiny pink flowers are produced up and down the branches, giving rise to clusters of bright purple berries that encircle the stems. The tiny berries are edible and because of their unique color have been used in garden salads and fruit salads. However, I’m willing to bet most people plant this native to attract wildlife to their yard as many songbirds are attracted to these berries.
Richard Lyons Nursery currently has this shrub in stock.
